Synopsis
A bamboo cutter finds a tiny girl inside a stalk and raises her as his own, growing wealthy from the gold he keeps finding alongside her. Convinced that nobility is what she deserves, he moves the family to the capital and arranges the trappings of aristocratic life, none of which she wanted. The film follows her constrained existence among suitors and etiquette while she remembers a childhood in the countryside that offered something the palace cannot, and the ending arrives with genuine devastation. Every luxury the capital offers her is something she never actually asked for.

Directed by Isao Takahata over roughly eight years, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya adapts the tenth-century Tale of the Bamboo Cutter using a sketch-like watercolor and charcoal style that abandons Studio Ghibli's usual clean linework entirely. The technique was enormously labor-intensive and contributed to the film's protracted production. It earned an Academy Award nomination and widespread critical acclaim, and it stands as Takahata's final film, frequently discussed as one of the most visually ambitious animated features ever produced. Its hand-drawn technique remains among the most labor-intensive in feature animation.
