The series built an unlikely international cult following, particularly through Netflix, by pairing deliberately crude, minimalist animation with sharp writing and surprisingly heavy emotional undercurrents. Its willingness to shift from absurd slapstick into genuine tragedy without warning is a defining trait, and later seasons have leaned progressively harder into the serious material the early episodes only hinted at beneath the jokes.
