Perfect Blue
パーフェクトブルー · 1998
A retired pop idol can't tell reality from stalker fantasy.
Synopsis
Mima Kirigoe leaves her career as a pop idol to become a serious actress, but the transition unravels her sense of self as an obsessive fan refuses to accept her new identity, and a mysterious website starts posting details about her life that only someone impossibly close could know. As the line between Mima's real experiences and increasingly disturbing hallucinations blurs, she can no longer trust her own perception of what is actually happening to her. It is a tense, deeply unsettling psychological thriller about identity, fame, and the violence of being watched, still shocking decades after its release.

Though about as violent as Ninja Scroll at parts, this film is as smart and exciting as they get, and deserves our highest praise. There's a reason this film has won awards.
