Story

Synopsis

A revolutionary psychotherapy device allows researchers to record and enter patients' dreams, and when prototypes are stolen the boundary between dreaming and waking begins collapsing for everyone connected to the project. Doctor Atsuko Chiba investigates using her dream avatar Paprika, moving through increasingly unstable mental landscapes as the intruder spreads delusions from one mind to the next. The film's imagery escalates relentlessly, and the distinction between what is happening and what is being dreamed becomes genuinely impossible to maintain by the end. Every intrusion spreads further, and the containment options keep narrowing.

Directed by Satoshi Kon and adapted from Yasutaka Tsutsui's novel, Paprika was Kon's final completed feature before his death and is widely regarded as one of animation's most visually audacious films. Its dream sequences, particularly the recurring parade imagery, have been enormously influential, and comparisons to Christopher Nolan's Inception have been made frequently enough that Nolan has addressed them publicly. Susumu Hirasawa's score is inseparable from the film's identity, and the work remains a cornerstone of animation's claim to genuine artistic ambition. Its imagery has been borrowed, referenced, and imitated across film and animation since.
