Story

Synopsis

In an ancient mythical Chinese countryside plagued by severe drought and cracked earth, villagers face imminent starvation as dried riverbeds attract ravenous subterranean demon beasts. According to ancient village prophecy, salvation lies in the return of Niu Lai, the celestial bovine spirit destined to channel divine rain clouds from the heavenly realm. When a humble orphan farm boy discovers an injured, glowing calf stranded in a mountain gorge, he nurses the magical creature with his meager water rations. As corrupt landlords attempt to capture the beast for private wealth, the young boy embarks on a spiritual journey.

The calf matures into the majestic guardian Niu Lai, shielding the boy from greedy imperial soldiers and monstrous river drakes summoned by drought demons. Ascending the sacred Cloud Peak, the boy and Niu Lai confront the ancient Scorching Sun Spirit, whose fiery domain has evaporated the empire's rainfall. Channeling the collective prayers of suffering mortal farmers, Niu Lai unleashes a thunderous heavenly roar that shatters the drought barrier. Torrential celestial rains pour across the valleys, restoring flourishing crops and blossoming greenery. Fulfilling his celestial mission, Niu Lai watches over the prosperous village before ascending into the starry skies.
