Synopsis
Decades after nuclear war, disease, disaster, and government collapse split Japan into three warring kingdoms, Aoteru Misumi, a humble agricultural officer from the countryside, decides enough is enough. Armed with little beyond his own knowledge and unshakeable eloquence, he begins a slow, dangerous climb through the ranks of one kingdom, driven by a conviction that Japan was never meant to stay broken. It is political drama on an epic scale, tracking one determined man's attempt to rebuild a nation from the ground up through strategy, persuasion, and sheer stubborn belief rather than brute force alone.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Nippon Sangoku: The Three Nations of the Crimson Sun is based on Ikka Matsuki's manga, animated by Studio Kafka, and premiered in April 2026. Its premise, a fractured, post-collapse Japan reunified through political maneuvering, drew immediate comparisons to Kingdom's historical Warring States epic, and early reception praised its sharp writing and ambitious scope. Licensed internationally through Amazon Prime Video with a same-day English dub, it arrived as one of the more talked-about political dramas of its season, signaling strong ambitions for a franchise built around large-scale nation-building storytelling.
