Story

Synopsis

The Matsuno sextuplets attend a middle school reunion where a classmate's remark sends them spiraling into an examination of exactly how little they have accomplished in the years since. The film mixes the series' rapid-fire absurdist comedy with a framing device involving time and regret, giving six characters defined entirely by uselessness an unexpected amount of introspection. It remains extremely funny throughout, but the underlying question about wasted potential is treated with more sincerity than the format suggests. Every joke lands harder because the underlying failure is treated as genuinely real.

Produced by Studio Pierrot and based on Fujio Akatsuka's classic Osomatsu-kun manga, Mr. Osomatsu reimagined the original children's characters as unemployed adults in their twenties, a premise that became an enormous commercial phenomenon in Japan.
