Story

Synopsis

One month after Madam Utayama's death reshapes the Ooku's power structure, the Medicine Seller returns to a court where family feuds and burning envy have birthed something new. The mononoke this time is the Hinezumi, a fire mouse whose victims feel their bodies burn from within until nothing remains, not even ash. Uncovering its Form, Truth, and Reason means excavating a twenty-year-old secret involving a concubine, an impossible pregnancy, and a decision made for the good of the royal line that its maker could never forgive herself for.

Written and directed by Kenji Nakamura with Koji Yamamoto co-writing, this is the second installment of the Mononoke movie trilogy, released theatrically in Japan in March 2025 and worldwide on Netflix that August. The franchise's radically stylized visual approach, drawing on woodblock print aesthetics with flat colors and unconventional framing, remains its defining trait. Like the original television series, it pairs supernatural horror with pointed commentary about the injustices inflicted on women within rigid social hierarchies, which is consistently where its spirits originate. Its striking art direction remains unlike anything else currently being produced.
