Story

Synopsis

Twelve years after Char's Rebellion, the Earth Federation has grown corrupt enough that an organization called Mafty has begun assassinating its officials, and Mafty's leader is Hathaway Noa, son of a celebrated war hero. A chance encounter aboard a hijacked shuttle puts him alongside Gigi Andalucia and Kenneth Sleg, the Federation colonel assigned to destroy him, and the three spend much of the film in each other's company without their true positions being spoken aloud. Every conversation between the three carries information none of them can safely acknowledge, and the tension comes from what remains deliberately unspoken throughout.

Directed by Shukou Murase at Sunrise and adapted from Yoshiyuki Tomino's novels, Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway opens a planned trilogy and is notable for unusually grounded political framing, treating its protagonist as a terrorist whose cause may be justified and whose methods are not. Its night-time mobile suit combat, atmospheric sound design, and restrained pacing earned strong reception.
