Synopsis
In 1963 Yokohama, Umi Matsuzaki raises signal flags each morning for a father lost at sea and helps run her family's boarding house. Her involvement with Shun Kazama and a campaign to save the school's dilapidated clubhouse from demolition ahead of the Tokyo Olympics develops into something more complicated when their family histories turn out to intersect uncomfortably. The film pairs a preservation campaign with a romance whose central obstacle arrives from an entirely unexpected direction. Every revelation about their families complicates something they had already decided.

Directed by Goro Miyazaki from a screenplay by his father Hayao and adapted from Tetsuro Sayama and Chizuru Takahashi's manga, From Up on Poppy Hill was Goro's second feature following the poorly received Tales from Earthsea, and it was substantially better received. Its meticulous depiction of early 1960s Yokohama, a period of postwar optimism ahead of the 1964 Olympics, gives the film considerable historical texture alongside its straightforward romantic plot. Its period detail remains the film's strongest and most frequently praised element. Its portrayal of postwar optimism gives the romance a distinctly hopeful backdrop.
