About the studio
WOWOW launched December 25, 1984 as Japan Satellite Broadcasting Co., Ltd., taking the WOWOW name in 2000, and became the country's first private satellite broadcaster when it began regular broadcasting April 1, 1991, notably as Japan's first full-time, full-HD, three-channel pay TV service. Based in Akasaka, Minato, Tokyo, WOWOW built a reputation for airing high-budget, often prestige-leaning anime, including Fate/Zero, Aldnoah.Zero, and Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress. *A pay channel that positioned itself as the place for anime that wanted to look and feel a bit more expensive than the average TV slot.* As a subscription satellite service rather than free broadcast TV, WOWOW's anime slate has tended to skew toward series with bigger production budgets and higher ambitions. Over 40 years since its founding, WOWOW remains one of the more premium destinations in Japan's crowded anime broadcast landscape.
