About the studio
Tencent Animation & Comics launched March 21, 2012 as part of Chinese tech giant Tencent's media empire, distributing Japanese anime and manga in China while also producing original Chinese donghua. *A tech company launching an entire anime and comics division is a very we're-building-an-ecosystem kind of move, and it worked.* The platform secured distribution rights for major franchises including One Piece, Naruto, and Reborn! around 2015, and that same year partnered with Kadokawa Group to bring more Japanese light novels and manga to Chinese audiences. Owned by Tencent Holdings, it was recognized on Forbes' 2019 list of China's Most Innovative Companies. Over a decade since its launch, Tencent Animation & Comics has become one of the central pipelines connecting Japanese anime content to one of the largest audiences in the world, alongside rivals bilibili and iQIYI in China's increasingly competitive anime streaming landscape.
