About the studio
Group TAC was founded in 1968 by former Mushi Production staff, based in Shibuya, Tokyo, and built a genuinely impressive run before eventually collapsing. Its longest-running credit, Manga Nihon Mukashi Banashi, aired from 1976 to 1994, one of Japan's longest-running television series in any format, and it later produced the acclaimed 1987 film The Tale of Genji, directed by Gisaburō Sugii. *42 years is a solid run for any company, let alone one in an industry this volatile.* Group TAC filed for bankruptcy in September 2010 following the death of its longtime head Atsumi Tashiro that July, and was fully liquidated shortly after. A successor studio, Diomedéa, formed from part of its remaining staff, while an unfinished project was handed off to OLM and Xebec. Group TAC's story is a reminder that even a studio with genuine cultural staying power isn't guaranteed to survive its founder's passing.
